Out of here

...in very short time frame. PM me if you want to stay in touch.

Not sure what is coming down the pike here in the US, but I know that I don't want to stay and find out.

This last deal I was in just closed today--and you know it is bad when your investment banker is acting like Indiana Jones and trying to get out of the Temple of Doom with you before whomever just bought a few million dollars of bonds from you realizes that they are already losing 2 points per year to inflation!

I'll take my chances outside the borders of the US.

Dog, my husband just got offered a job as a bond trader. We were hoping there was enough time to make some cash before we bailed, maybe not huh?

i think it will go on for awhile yet, i'm just stopping while i am ahead. who knows what will happen next. if he does take the job, just try and limit your downside (ie, no new house, car, trip, etc.) I might be wrong and the US finance world might keep on ticking...or not.

Actually, I would take the trip, but avoid the house and car.

I'd love to stay in touch as you make your way as an expatriot.

I find that if I turn off the blogs WHILE I am out of the US my outlook on life improves dramatically AND my effectiveness increases so regrettably I will not be going to the forums while abroad.

Good luck Dog. It seems you have let the doom and gloom talk get to you. I think of all the world is ending July you fill in the year posts I have read on this and some other sites and just laugh my ass off. You think its bad now? This period is a freakin' walk in the park compared to the way it was before indoor plumbing. If it improves your mental well being not to read the negative bullshit good for you.

An old Celtic prayer, some credit to Saint Patrick:

May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon your fields and, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Good luck, Dog. I hope you change your mind about not posting here, because your experiences could be a very valuable lesson for those of us that will be back here holding down the fort for your return. Keep your ID here and go on a "GIM diet" if it helps your productivity, but don't stop eating altogether!

DF,
I do understand the 'not posting' thing.

BUT BE WARNED. GIM is like a drug addiction you can't kick.

I know. I tried. Left for three months. Got my head back on and then started up again.

Like I said, it's an addiction.

Good luck. I fear though that where ever in EU you are going, it' won't be any better there.

I've got a buddy of mine who's been in Germany for three years. He's coming home before the end of the year. HE SAID exactly the same thing about over there as YOU'VE SAID about over here.

At least we have the RTKABA here. At least for a while anyway.

As I said, good luck. Keep your tail a waggin.

I think that you might find that to be the case wherever you're at, if you tune out the world and the interwebs your productivity goes up. You're changing two variables at one time...
I wish that you'd reconsider posting here as it would be very interesting to follow along with an expat's experiences in a new land. Good luck to you in whatever you do.

I find it funny that people associate freedom with a land mass. Freedom resides in your head. You either choose to be free, and act accordingly, or you make excuses as to why you're not free.

Sure, America was supposed to be a bold experiment in human history, the idea of individual liberty. Now, we sure talk about it a lot, but the reality is much different. In some other countries, you don't hear so much TALK about freedom, but in PRACTICE, they often are MORE free in many respects.

Individual liberty is something each person must seize for themselves. Voting will not make you free. Writing letters to parasites begging them not to do stupid legislative stuff will not make you free.

I would rather move myself and my family somewhere where they are more free in ACTUALITY, than stay somewhere where we are more free in THEORY.

The bottom line for me? I have ZERO interest in seeing my family die at the hands of thugs, ANYWHERE. And I really don't want to have to participate in a gun battle with ANYONE. Given the choice and the means, I would rather remove my family from harms way, than stand my ground against overwhelming odds, and watch my loved ones possibly die, for an IDEA. Yeah, it sounds really great to boast about putting a bullet in the head of government thugs on an internet forum, and it also makes great fiction reading. You will most likely end up as fertilizer this way.

Having said this, I don't see myself moving from Oregon to another country. But I'd certainly like the option, and I will do it, if things get too weird.

I don't know much about Canada, but what are you doing for your freedom there?

Good luck, Dog Farm. I do hope you post here again, because your experience in this could be valuable. I've found very few expats who are doing it for survival; most are in it for cheap living and a house full of servants.

Maybe you could start a blog.

can someone still be an American patriot while fleeing the country ?

after the second American Revolution(?) is over
the Americans who stayed and fought
maybe they lost family members and/or friends
maybe they were seriously wounded/injured themselves
what would they say to the ones who left the country until it was safe to come back ?

maybe i'm reaching here, ( second American revolution )
but some people believe in fighting for their freedoms
instead of trying to find them in another country

Some people are more interested in being free individuals, than being an "American patriot".

You're assuming they'll want to come back. There's a whole wide world out there to live in. America was once a unique and promising country. Now it's mostly a has-been, overrun with killers, thieves, and liars (government and corporate cronies).

Some people believe in BEING free, rather than FIGHTING to be free.
